Cancer victims can regain confidence through fashion and beauty. With the number of mesothelioma cancer victims on the rise, physicians are seeking holistic methods to help the patient heal faster and reduce stressors in their lives. Before, during and after a cancer diagnosis, the patient should use fashion and beauty to look better and feel better. Studies have shown that this strategy works.
Why Choose Beauty for Mesothelioma Patients?
From the first moment of exposure to the diagnosis, the patient may live between 20 to 30 years while the cancer is dormant. Most mesothelioma patients only have about nine months to live after their diagnosis due to the nature of the disease. Pleural mesothelioma is difficult to remove through surgery and chemotherapy. When someone is facing impending death, supporters should do whatever possible to make their final days enjoyable and bearable. Fashion can help mesothelioma patients cope with the disease.
“Look Good. Feel Good”
Entire campaigns have been built around helping patients cope through fashion and beauty. For several years, the community has launched “Look Good. Feel Good.” campaigns to help clients improve their attitude through fashion and beauty. These events involve full makeovers that may include clothes, haircuts and in the case of women, makeup. Cancer patients often suffer a loss of appetite and strength during cancer. This can take away a person’s confidence. Fashion can help patients feel better about their prognosis.
Some patients experience depression and self-consciousness. They may not even leave their hospital room as a result. Patients that get dressed in beautiful clothes and go out into fresh air often feel better about their situation. Patients through makeover sessions may learn how to disguise hair loss with beautiful scarves, hats or other means. Scarves may be tied in fashionable ways to improve the patient’s appearance.
Many stylists will teach these skills and others through a makeover session. Most patients remark that the makeovers make a significant difference in their overall well-being. The American Cancer Society and the National Cosmetology Association often work together and help patients feel better about their appearance. People often volunteer their services from these organizations. In past years, New York City’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. have participated in assisting with helping patients.
Though the likelihood of a mesothelioma patient obtaining a ‘clean bill of health’ is small, the patient can feel better for a brief period of time during their treatment. Search online to find programs that will support mesothelioma and cancer patients in this endeavor. A person that is sensitive to the needs of the patient will be the most successful in raising his or her spirits.
